In this modern world of wireless Internet and phones that can do just about everything except teach us how to love, there is an increasingly large number of people that work from home. As long as you have a personal computer and a place to sit down, then there is no reason why you should have to commute all the way to an office building.

The majority of people that work from home are freelancers. Freelance writing, graphic design, and online consulting are becoming very lucrative enterprises for those that have the willpower to actually work at home and not spend their days playing online poker in their underwear. If you’re going to cut it in the fast paced world of freelance writing for example, you’re going to need to get organized or you’re going to find yourself on the business end of the employment chopping block in no time.

Find yourself a nice desktop area and keep it clutter free. You’ll be shocked at how much more you will get done in a cleaner work environment. Clutter will lead to stress and stress is a productivity killer.

You’re also going to want to make sure that you’re comfortable while working. If you’re going to be seated in front of a computer for hours on end, then invest in a quality office chair. The more relaxed you are, the easier it will be for you to write. Once you’ve got your workspace set up, clean, and comfy, then you’re ready to start working.

To help stay on task, try making a list of things you need to get done in a single day. Be ambitious, but also reasonable. Know your limits and don’t set ridiculously high expectations for yourself. Try budgeting your time so that you can get as much done as you can in the shortest amount of time. Also be sure to give yourself breaks throughout the day. Everyone needs a few minutes a day to get up from their desk and stretch and stay nourished.

Working from home can be a great experience once you learn how to function without someone telling you what to do. Being your own boss can be a rewarding prospect, but since you canít exactly fire yourself for a poor performance, you’re going to need to show initiative if you want to be successful.
