• Telework Challenges

Posted by Kate Lister on 18th October 2008

Technology and a global marketplace have made telework more common. But there are some real challenges associated, not the least of which are co-worker attitudes.

Two surveys were conducted recently by OfficeTeam, a staffing service specializing in the placement of highly skilled administrative professionals. The first survey was based on telephone interviews with 492 workers 18 years of age or older and employed in an office environment. The second survey was based on telephone interviews with 150 senior executives from the largest companies in the United States.

Here’s the attitude you’re up against if you want to work from home: 48% of workers polled said their jobs would be more difficult if they did not work in the same office as their supervisors. Of this group, 27% felt it would be much more difficult. Similarly, 58% of managers surveyed said it is important that all staff members work in the same location.

Employees were asked, “In your opinion, would it make your job easier or more difficult if you reported to a manager who didn’t work in the same location as you?” Their responses:

Much more difficult—27%
Somewhat more difficult—21%
Neither easier nor more difficult—26%
Somewhat easier—13%
Much easier—8%
Don’t know—5%

Executives were asked, “How important is it for all of the members of your department to work from the same location?” Their responses:

Very important—13%
Somewhat important—45%
Somewhat unimportant—29%
Not important—12%

So if you telecommute you face some communication challenges, and you’ll have to go the extra mile to make sure you keep the lines of communication open to ensure that the folks who think you make their job harder by not being under the same roof are pleasantly surprised.

• The Best of Both - Commute in Bunny Slippers

Posted by Tom on 16th October 2008

A Firmware Engineer at Tesla Motors (they make a very cool electric sports car that goes 0-60 in 4 seconds!) decided to build these all-electric pink bunny slippers just to see if they could.

If you have a home based business, freelance and work from home, or telecommute, these babies are just the ticket. They only go 15mph, but for a jaunt to the grocery store you can save gas and keep your bunny slippers on too.

• State Business Opportunity Laws Can Save Your Butt

Posted by Kate Lister on 19th September 2008

Twenty-six states have ‘business opportunity’ laws to protect you from those idiots that claim you can make thousands of dollars while you sleep. The laws prohibit the sale of business opportunities unless you’re given a pre-sale disclosure document that must be filed with a designated state agency.

They typically cover every imaginable type of business opportunity that might be offered. If a business opportunity seller is not required to provide pre-sale disclosures by the FTC Franchise and Business Opportunity Rule, then these disclosures will almost always be required by the laws of the states listed below. If you live somewhere else take a look at one of the other states laws to see what questions you should ask.

The disclosures required by state business opportunity laws differ somewhat, and typically they provide more abbreviated information than the FTC’s Rule requires. However, most of these laws provide you important rights and remedies, including required security bonds to cover investor losses. If the opportunity you’re looking at can’t be verified with a state agency or the FTC, run don’t walk to the nearest exit.

We’ve compiled everything we’ve learned from 25+ years as a banker, investor, venture capitalist, and entrepreneur into an all new and up-to-date eBook. Finding Money—Secrets of a Former Banker includes information about small business loans, raising money from angels and other private investors, venture capital, government loans, grants, preparing a business plan or financing application, and other money management advice. Finding Money is available for immediate download. Order your copy today.

If you are considering purchasing a work-at-home or other business opportunity, and live in a state with a business opportunity law, find out more about the protection provided by your state statute before you invest.
